Cheap Chinese mobile phones are available in India now-a-days and these are proving to be a problem for the law enforcement agencies.
These phones have fake International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number and hence any calls made through these phones can’t be traced .
The investigations following the terrorist attacks in the country brought to light that the terrorists have been using these cheap Chinese phones to communicate in order to evade capture. The SIM card details cannot be traced from a phone without an IMEI number. The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique 17 or 15 digit code used to identify an individual mobile phone to a GSM or UMTS network. The handset can be blocked at anytime with the help of IMEI number if it is lost.
Bangalore City Crime Branch (CCB) officials reportedly informed, “It is very difficult to extract details from such handsets. Though these ‘Chinese mobiles’ are supposed to have genuine IMEI numbers, they are either fake or several phones have the same IMEI number, making it impossible to find out any details.”
The Intelligence Bureau recommended to the Home Ministry and the Department of telecommunications (DoT) that the sales of such handsets should be banned immediately to facilitate the enforcement of law and order. Besides, these mobile phones are said to violate international GSM standards too.
